Assignment 1 ( Sense of Cinema)
I have done my review about Sense of Cinema. I have chosen Francois Roland Truffaut, French Film Director as my review. He born on 6th February 1932 and died on 21 October 1984. He had started his career in 1948 in a film club and he met Bazin. Bazin are the one would have great effect on his professional and personal life. Bazin and he became personal friend as they were critic and another head of another film society at that time. Bazin had helped him out of financial and criminal situations during his formative years. Bazin had protected him when he was put in to the jail because he deserted the army and he set him up with a job at his newly formed film magazine Cahiers du cinéma. In the year of 1957 he had married and he founded his own production company “Les Films du Carrosse”.  He directed Les Mistons (1957), considered as the real first step of his cinematographic work and next he had succeed his first full-length film The 400 Blow (1959) was the beginning of the new way of making movies in france. He was the most popular and successful French film director ever. His main themes were passion, women, childhood and faithfulness.

I like his movie as his movies theme is more to childhood, women, and faithfulness as I can see in his first movie (The 400 Blow). This movie is a film about freedom and the incidents were based on the early life of its director himself. In the story itself, the main character was a boy named Antoine Doinel a misunderstood adolescent in Paris who is thought by his parents and teachers to be a troublemaker. He frequently runs away from both places and he finally quits school but after a couple days finally being caught by his teacher. He had no money so he plans to steal his stepfather’s typewriter so he could effort his finance. He apprehended while trying to return the typewriter and his stepfather was angry so he had been sent him over to the police and he spend a night in the jail. Everything he wants is just his freedom but he had sent to an observation center as her mom wishes. One day, while he was playing football with a bunch of teens, he escaped under a fence and runs away to the ocean, a places that he can spend his entire life as he found his freedom.

Fahrenheit 451 was the next movie I have watched. This story is telling about society that has given up on independent thinking, interaction with others and the natural world itself.  The main character named Montag is a firefighter. He sets fires and his primary targets are books. In that community, it grew less opinionated and more obsessed with political correctness. They began to find the fault with books and banned them all. He increased his curiosity about the books after encounters a girl named Clarisse. He had a wife, who you can see she regularly chooses to watch TV over her husband. One day, his wife and her friends who have come over watch TV. Montag read a poem to them and they felt offended and started to complaint against him. One of them cried and they thought that books, novel, poem is a weapon to hurts people deeply, but he found out that books are real and meaningful; it written by someone that have put their soul inside the book. After a couple days, Montag tells his captain that he wanted to resign but the captain convinced him to go on one more call, which turn out it was his house. His wife leaves him because she can’t live with his book obsession and leaves him to be punished by firemen. Lastly, the captain been killed by Montag as he wanted to destroy each and every books from Mogtag even the last book he hide it in his coat. He escapes and search for the book people. He selects a book to memorize, Tales of Mystery & Imagination by Edgar allan Poe and become one of them book people.

As you can see, both movies had its themes and meanings. For the first movie The 400 blows, the kids was been misunderstood by others and what he speak no one will trust him so he prefer to tell lies and wanted to find his freedom. In my opinions, this movie is given me more about family loves; I knew sometimes child would like to have freedom but lack of family loves it will become dangerous. For the Fahrenheit 451, in my opinions, it tells about how books are important to us. It contains a lot of knowledge and gives us advice in different situation. The government is stupid to order the firefighter to destroy every book in the city and depends on technologies, for example TV. You may think that you can learn something through TV but most of the time is just wasting your time as there was a scene that his wife answering questions in front of TV. That is just my opinions, and both of these stories is meaning full for me. I like it as the director Francois Truffaut has deep ponder and able to create such a meaningful movies. What makes movie interesting was its own story telling and it could have to influence others deeply; it is important.

Article ( Sense of Cinema )
I agree with the articles says that the movie “The 400 Blows – directed by Francois Truffaut” is about Francois Truffaut’s earlier life and is about rebellion. This movie I have watched twice time. First time I watch I have no idea and not really understand what he is trying to say; I just can understand that the boy Antoine just want to have his freedom. After watching the second time and according to the articles that I had read, I found that the whole movie in different scenes, Francois Truffaut was trying to give moral value or impact to the public. In this movie, the boy named Antoine. During his school time, he was unlucky. His friends were trying to pass around the nuke photo book. Unfortunately, he was called by his teacher while the nuke photo book was in his hand. He had been punished and he started to dislike further his studies. His homework is interrupted and he started to skip school. After his next absence, he said that his mother has died. When she turns up at his school, alive and furious, he is marked as a liar. “I lie… but only once in a while. At times, if I told the truth they wouldn’t believe me. So I tell lies.” – Antoine Doinel (Jean-Pierre Léaud), Les Quatre cents coups. Human will lost truth in you if you have try to lie once before, so for what I have think this is a really good point for nowadays’ generations. Next, He had a fight with his parents because his exam paper. He loves Balzac and he decides to describes "the death of my grandfather'' in a close paraphrase of Balzac in his exam paper. But his teacher had assumed him as plagiarism. He became worst and eventually to a downward spiral: He and a friend steal a typewriter, he gets caught trying to return it and is sent to the juvenile detention home. His parents were allowed him to stay over in the juvenile detention home rather than bring him back. This was because they said that "If he came home, he would only run away again''. During that night, he hangs along with prostitutes and also thieves, He was helpless. For what I think with this is parents should give 100% of loves to their children. This does not show that they love them but making it worst. So Antoine escaped from that place and he found freedom; caught between land and water, between past and future. It is the first time he has seen the sea. We sense that it was drawn directly out of Truffaut's heart. It also shows that a resourceful boy growing up in Paris and apparently dashing headlong into a life of crime.

(Final Assignment)
Movie Sequel Comparison – Martial Arts
Introduction
Sequel
What is a Sequel? Sequel is a narrative, document or other work of literature, film, theatre, television, and so on. That continues the story or expands upon some earlier work. In many cases, the sequel continues elements of the original story, often with the same characters and settings. In movies, sequels are common; it can lead to a movie series. There are many formats for sequels. For example, they either have unrelated titles or have a letter added on the end or they have numbers at the end or have an added word on the end. Last, it is also common for a sequel to have a variation of the original title or have a subtitle.

Martial Arts
What is Martial Arts? The term martial arts refers to all of the various systems of training for combat that have been arranged or systematized, which are practiced for variety of reasons. For examples, it is to self-defense military and law enforcement applications, competition, physical fitness, mental and spiritual development, meditation, as well as entertainment. Although nowadays martial art has related with the fighting arts of eastern Asia, it originally came from Europe in 1550s referred to the combat system. There are numerous martial art techniques taught in different countries; categorized different criteria.

Martial Arts Movies
There are 5 genres in Martial Arts Movies – Wuxia Pian (Wuxia Film), GongFu Pian (KungFu Film), GuoShu Pian (National Art Film), WuDa Pian(Fight Film using Martial Arts) and Fant-Asia Film. Wuxia Pian (Wuxia Film) basically is like “martial Chivalrous-Hero Film”. They fall into the traditional tales and the legend of superhuman swordsmen who fight with magical martial arts skills. The first genre of Chinese Martial Arts Cinema was born because Ding Jung starred Beijing Opera Star Tan Xi Pei. The next genre is GongFu Pian(KungFu Film) from China. Kung Fu Films produced in 1960s; these movies were filmed with characters that fight with more realistic skills. Furthermore, GuoShu Pian(National Art Film) is a film that mixes KungFu Film with the magic of Wuxia. The third genre was created because Jackie Chan’s Kung fu films were successful at Golden Harvest; Studio Shaw Brothers tasked  director Chang Cheh to fight with Director Liu Chia Liang. That’s why they produced the third genre of martial arts. In 1980s, Jackie Chan invented the fourth genre of martial arts film known as Wuda Pian (fight films using martial arts). Jackie Chan had combined martial arts with dangerous stunts; most art films nowadays all around the world are influenced by Jackie Chan’s Wuda vision. In 1983, producter-director Tsui hark created the final genre, Fant-Asia Films. These make over; stylized wuxia movies mixed fevered over-the-top action mixed with far-out sight gags and gravity-defying wire-fu.
Martial arts films have been produced all over the world, but the genre has been dominated by Hong Kong action cinema, peaking from 1971 with the rise of Bruce Lee until the mid-1990s with a general decline in the industry. In the 2000s, Thailand's film industry became an international force in the genre with the films of Tony Jaa. This is because in the year of 2003, Director Prachya Pinkaew directed Ong Bak: Muay Thai Warrior, starring Tony Jaa. This movie went on to become a worldwide sensation and was the highest- grossing Thai Film of the year.

Movie Sequel – Storyline
I would like to choose 2 Martial Arts films from different countries – Hong Kong and Thailand. There’re “Once upon a Time in China” (movie series) from Hong Kong, directed by Tsui hark, and “Ong Bak” (movie series) from Thailand, directed by Prachya Pinkaew. Before comparing the 2 films, I would like to display the storyline for both movie series.

Once Upon a Time in China (Movie Series)
This movie series basically is about the friction between China and the West. The hero represented here is Wong Fei Hung and the plots are primarily how Wong Fei Hung saves the countries in19th century using Chinese martial arts. This movie series were directed by Tsui Hark.

Once Upon A Time in China I:
Wong Fei Hung meets the “Iron Vest” Master Yim. The beginning of this story is about Leung Foon got into trouble with chinese gangsters and Leung Foon was beaten up by them. He ran into the chinese street and one of the students of Wong Fei Hung saved him from the gangsters. During the fight, they fought from the Chinese street to the western restaurant. Meanwhile, Wong Fei Hung was around with his students in the western restaurant together with foreigners; in the end, he ends the fight between them. In the next scene, Chinese gangsters take revenge during the Chinese opera performance and the audiences are foreigners. Wong Fei Hung was there again with foreigners and he had protected “13th aunt” and the pastor who was going to help Wong Fei Hung out about showing himself to the public to be the witness. At last, the pastor died. In the middle part of the movie Leung Foon wanted to find a mentor to follow; he found Master Yim because he won a battle with another master. After a while, Master Yim wanted to be better than Wong Fei Hung, so he challenged him to a battle; at last, he failed. Master Yim joined the Chinese gangsters to make money to make his dreams come true even faster. He wished to start a dojo. Leung Foon realizes, he is following the wrong mentor so at last he decided to help Wong Fei Hung.  The story is going to end it in a climax; it was the conflict between Wong Fei Hung and Master Yim.  Master Yim took revenge; in the end he loses and died under the foreigners’ guns.

Once Upon A time in China II:
Wong Fei Hung meets Donnie Yen and the White Lotus Society. This story happened in Canton, China. What we can observe throughout this movie is the revolution and the establishment of a republic in China. At first, Wong Fei Hung , 13th  aunt and Leung foon were having fun, bringing along the western camera to shoot a memorable scene in Canton. 13th aunt took a photo with the flash on of the  White Lotus Society destroying westerners’ things, everyone was looking at her and the White Lotus started to attack her because she was wearing the western dress and holding the western camera. Wong Fei Hung saved her; he punished the white Lotus Society saying that “Don’t pretend to be a god to cheat innocent people.” After a while, they face troubles (shooting flaming arrows) from the society again while having a pitch to the foreigners about traditional-medicines. Again he saved a Chinese guy who helps him to translate Chinese to English since he himself and his student Leung Foon can’t speak English well. The Chinese guy actually was part of an underground movement seeking to overthrow the Qing dynasty and establish a republic in China with another friend. Three of them met up while Wong Fei Hung was saving the kids from White Lotus Society just because they learned a western instrument, White Lotus wanted to kill all of them. Same thing happen again, they had a fight inside the building; the building is the only place that can communicate with outsiders. White Lotus tends to cut off the antenna. The story didn’t end yet, one of the Chinese succeeded to escape, but another one had to imitate Leung Foon. He followed Wong Fei Hung to meet the White Lotus Society so that he could help the village that took control over of them. At last, Wong Fei Hung won the battle and villages got recruited. Before heading into the ship, Leung Foon forgot to bring along the important material that shows “The Republic in China”, so they decided to go back to take it. At Last, the Chinese guy was dead because of a bullet shot; the Chinese Officer (Donnie Yen) died too although he battled with Wong Fei Hung. In the End, Wong Fei Hung and Leung Foon were able to meet up on time with another Chinese guy that the time they had mention earlier; they were able to send the message and the things from his friend who had just passed away in The Republic Mission.

Once Upon A time in China III:
Wong Fei Hung meets “Clubfoot” and he joined the lion dance competition. The film is set in Foshan, China. The story basically is talking about lion dance competitions that organized by the Chinese government so that it shows that Chinese is even better then foreigners’ countries. But this competition theme almost destroyed the whole city and harmed a lot of innocent people in the city. There was a guy named Chiu Tin-bak, he came to the Cantonese Association who owned by Wong Kei-Ying to persuade them not to join the competition. Chiu Tin Bak just has only one mission: “not to give any opportunity to others to join the lion dance competition.” During that scene, “Clubfoot” was with them; Wong Kei-Ying was beaten up by him and he was hurt badly. In the middle of the story, there was 3 group of Cantonese Association who fight before the competition; the reason was that their students were transferring themselves to another group, so they fought to prove that the winner was the best among them. Wong Fei Hung found them stubborn and decided to be the mediator to solve their conflict between them. On another hand, before the real competition starts, there was a preliminary. This preliminary was held between the crowded Chinese streets. Meanwhile, there was a conflict between “Clubfoot” and Leung Foon; and “Clubfoot” had a terribly injury on his leg because of Leung Foon. He was kicked from Chiu Tin Bak’s society; everyone was looking down on him since his strength was his kicking kungfu. Wong Fei Hung doesn’t want to join the lion dance competition in the beginning but at last he attended. This is because he himself and his students were going to save the President Li from danger. Foreigners are going to shoot President Li while the red lantern flew to her. The story ended with them able to save her, meanwhile Wong Fei Hung killed the one who wanted to kill the President. He was a friend with 13th aunt, and he betrayed 13th aunt; a camera recorded him killing the American spy from China.

Once Upon A Time in China IV:
Wong Fei Hung had conflicts between the red Lantern Sect and wants to kill the German general to avenge A'lan Chengdu (Chinese Officer). This story is about Lion Dance competition with others weird animal’s competitor. A'lan Chengdu was died because Wong fei Hung and his companions were late to the competitions while they were actually dealing with The Red Lantern Sect. Wong Fei Hung was dealing with The Red Lantern Sect is because The Red Lantern Sect’s people all were xenophobic cult that goes around killing foreigners and destroying everything which not regarded to Chinese culture. In the end, the Priest of The Red Lantern Sect been killed by foreigners. Before the priest die, they had few minor conflict between both of them. Besides, they fought a several time before Wong fei Hung and The Red Lantern Sect; the story is in the middle of the story. After A'lan Chengdu’s funeral, Wong Fei Hung requested to have a competition again to avenge A'lan Chengdu. In the end, they won the competition although foreigners set some hidden weapons but they were able to escape from it. Shortly after they emerge victorious, they received news about the forces of the Eight-Nation Alliance have defeated Chinese forces and occupied Beijing. Wong Fei Hung team up with “Clubfoot” to kill the German general; they defeat and kill Iron Fist and Duen Tin-lui, 2 men who under the general. The story end with Wong Fei Hung didn’t kill the general same goes to “Clubfoot”; the general managed to escape with bad injuries; Wong Fei Hung realized that it would make no difference even if he killed the general because he can’t reverse the situation in Beijing, so he heads back to Foshan with his companions.

Once Upon A Time in China V:
Wong fei Hung meets Pirates. After the armies of the Eight-Nation Alliance occupy Beijing, the collapse of the Qing Dynasty is urgent. Wong Fei-hung and his companions returned to Foshan in southern China and prepared to move to Hong Kong. When they arrived at the port town, they saw that the town is in a desolate state, as the authorities were running away from all the public funds, leaving the local army garrison without any money or food. This situation became worst with the presence of pirates, who terrorized the coast and seal off the sea route. Wong Fei Hung and his companions decided to solve local crime their problems, for examples: force to deal with the threats, leading to three rivalries with the pirates and final victory for the lead. Wong Fei Hung and companions decided to settle in Hong Kong to help the local government maintain peace and security. In the end, they managed to capture the pirates and then same thing happen again there will no peace in local army garrison although Wong Fei Hung solved the previews problems. This is because everyone was fighting with anything they want.

Once Upon A Time in China And America:
Wong Fei Hung lost his memories during the journey to America and he defenses the robberies. The beginning of this story is about Wong Fei Hung brought along 13th aunt and “Clubfoot” to America to meet “bucktooth”. This is because “bucktooth’ had started “PoChiLam” in America. During their journey to America, they pick up a friendly cowboy named Billy, who is almost dying of thirst. While they were having lunch, a bunch of hostile Native Americans had attacked them. They managed to escaped from the attackers but they fell in to the river while both of them, Wong Fei Hung and “Clubfoot” were saving 13th aunt from the their carriage who was moving fast. 13th aunt and “Clubfoot” were rescued by someone and they sent them to “bucktooth’s PoChiLam - clinic”. However, Wong hits his head on a rock and loses his memory as a consequence. Besides, He was saved by a Native American tribe. In the middle of this story is about Wong Fei Hung tried to remember his past memories but he fails. When Wong finally regained his memory, “Clubfoot” almost died because he imitated Wong Fei Hung’s Kung Fu Skills; he had a battle with his master so could let his master regained his memory more faster. Meanwhile, the Americans mayor were together with Mexico bandits were successfully robbed the bank’s money and they framed the people in Po-chi-lam for it. Every Chinese people were arrested and almost hung them. When Mexico bandits realized the mayor was actually giving them lesser money than what they had set the prices earlier, they returned to the town to claim his money. Coming to the end of the story, Wong Fei Hung managed to catch the bandits and he was able to clear his name with ensuing fights with bandits.

Ong bak (Movie Series)
This movie basically is related to a Buddha image and also traditional Thai Martial Arts; action film. "Ong" refers to the Buddha image;"Bak" means to scar or cut with a sharp instrument or sword. Starring Tony Jaa was the main character in the movie series, but Ong Bak I, II, III’s storyline were not the same. This movies series were directed by Prachya Pinkaew. We would like to know more about the story of Ong Bak series before comparing 2 movies series- Hong kong and Thailand.

Ong bak : Muay Thai Warrior
Ting ( Tony Jaa ) was the Hero to save the village by returning to head of ancient Ong bak. The beginning of this story is about the village fell in despair after thieves from Bangkok decapitated the statue and took the head with them. Ting volunteered to travel to Bangkok area to search for the head of Ong Bak. He was extremely skill in Muay Thai and he promised to return the Ong bak’s head to the village with his cousin Humlae. In the end Humlae had sacrificed life; Ting was survived during the fight with the Bangkok thieves. In the middle of the story is about how Ting convinces his cousin Humlae to save the Village. The Village cannot stand longer anymore if the thieves crush the ancient Ong bak’s head; this is because ancient Ong Bak was the god who provides water, foods, safety and so on for the village, so they need to return the head of Ong bak as fast as possible. Ting fails many times to convince Humlae, for examples: Humlae took all Ting’s money went to the boxing zone to gamble. Ting’s wanted to have all his money back and he started to fight with the “Hero”, (the “hero” is the guy who won every battle in the boxing zone”). This was related to the business man who willing to spend higher cost to win the gamble with another business man. The ensuing fight started after Ting had fought with the “hero”; the business man who loses in gamble was the one who steal the Ong Bak’s head. In the end, he died under a huge Ong Bak’s head; Ting was able to save the village.

Ong bak 2:The beginning
This Story is about the year of 1431 in feudal siam. Tien (Tony Jaa) was the main character of the movie. He was a prince; he wanted to be like his father Lord Sihadecho who can fight during the war. Unfortunately, his father sent him to the dancing classed to make him learn about traditional Thai dance. He was confused about his father decision but he obeys his command although he doesn’t like it anyways. His father had promised him to bring him back to the palace. Lord Sihadecho’s man who was bringing Tien home was actually a spy from another side. Luckily Tien was saved by another man who was under Lord Sihadecho, but in the end he died. Basically that was just an intro about how Tien grown up. He was kidnapped by savage slave traders, who throw him into a pit with a giant crocodile when he proves uncontrollable (it was a fight scene between Tien and crocodile); and there are more ensuing fight scene in the back. He was saved by Chernang; Chernang become his mentor to guide him different Martial Arts skills. In the end of the story was Tien was unable to forget how rude it is Rajasena killed his parents in front of his eyes, so he decided to revenge. In the end, Tien thought that he killed Rajasena but Rajasena was actually wearing a sword proof vest. He went back to search for Chernang, Chernang wasn’t there anymore including all people who are learning martial arts. Rajasena give demand to his men to kill Tien. Tien fought with bad guys using all skills he had learned to defend himself but at last he lose to a crow ghost; he was capture away to meet Rajasena. In the end, he realized Chernang was the guy who killed his parents and Chernang was willing to die under Tien; he gave the chance to let Tien killed him. The Last of this story is about Tien getting older with moustache on him.

Ong Bak 3:
This story is a prequel with previous move Ong Bak 2; started with Tien was beaten up badly by Rajasena’s men; the storyline is more on spiritually. There was an illusion happened to Lord Rajasena. The illusion is about a curse who cursed by the crow ghost. Crow ghost gave offer to the Lord Rajasena to end the curse but the Lord refused. Lord Rajasena ordered his men to kill Tien, before killing him, a man arrived with a pardon from the king, mark that he will have Tien; Lord Rajasena was in anger. The messenger returns Tien to the Kana Khone villagers and Tien was revived. Although he was revived, he became a handicap; his action moves difficulty and wanted to suicide, but Pim was the one who heal his life. After fully recover, he realized that the traditional thai dance actually can heal his inner mind and also his mentality. The climax was, villagers were capture by the Lord Crow Ghost ( Crow Ghost become the Lord after killing Rajasena) and he forced them to do work nonstop like animals; they was torturing elephants too . A lot people died and so to elephants too, this is because they were unable to overcome it. After a while, Tien arrived. Crow ghost set a spell to Tien, says that he won the war and he will be the Lord forever; Tien broke the illusion and Tien let the elephant to kill him in the end, although Tien wanted to save him once.

Opinion
I will divide it into 2 sections – Storytelling scenes and Fight scenes. First of all, I would like to start with Storytelling Scenes. In Ong bak, the director prefers to have scenes that don’t have dialogue and let Tony jaa act the story himself, for example the scene where Tien fights a crocodile and the scene where Tien conquer a group of elephants, also there is also a scene where an eclipse took place and killed all the animals and humans. While Once Upon a Time In China is 100% with dialogue, so Ong Bak showed that even though its  an action movie, it can still have fantasy-like scenes to tell the story without dialogue. Also, without dialogue, the audience is able to use their imagination, while with dialogue the plot is given to you directly. For the fight scenes, Once upon a time in China uses a lot of fighting techniques, no 2 people in the movie fight similarly In contrast, in Ong Bak all the characters used mainly Muay Thai, until Ong Bak 2 where they introduced different fighting styles. I prefer Once upon a time in China’s fight scenes because it has a lot of creative fighting styles in it. Also, Ong Bak has a lot of blood and violence in it, while Cnce upon a time in china has little blood because this is to show that Wong Fei Hung doesn’t kill humans, and he only fights for justice.
